Walks Around Exeter
Some of the best walking in Devon sits on Exeter’s doorstep. The Exe Valley Way north from Exwick to Brampford Speke, the riverside path south to Topsham, the Roman walls and Northernhay Gardens in the city itself, and Dartmoor’s edge half an hour away.
Our walks coverage is in the Guides section. Highlights below.
Riverside
The Quayside to Topsham canal path is the classic city-to-estuary walk – five miles flat along the Exeter Ship Canal and the river to Topsham. Heading the other way, the Exe Valley Way climbs gently from Exwick through Cowley to Brampford Speke.
City heritage
The Roman walls loop links Rougemont, Northernhay Gardens, Cathedral Close and the Quayside in a couple of miles. Half a day if you stop for coffee and the Underground Passages.
Dartmoor edge
From Exeter you can be on the Dartmoor edge in 25 minutes. The Teign valley around Christow and Dunsford, the climbs above Bovey Tracey, and the longer walks above Moretonhampstead.
